Bio

Los Angeles-based Chris Wills makes pop music that dabbles in the realms of the romantic and the absurd. Born and raised in New Jersey, Wills has been writing songs since his preteen years. He grew up on a diet of classic rock and the blues, and spent high school in and out of studios, working with different producers. It took a cross country move to the West Coast and a global pandemic for him to hone in on a sound that felt truly authentic to the kind of art he dreamed of making.

Enter “All American,” Wills’ latest single (out now), which started in the back of a car. It was the middle of the pandemic in LA, and things in the city were dead and weird. Wills spent most of his time parking his car somewhere, and sitting down for a few hours to work on music. On the night he wrote “All American,” he parked in front of the North Hollywood subway station, and began thinking about an old friend from his hometown, one who passed away in LA. Wills thought about all the dreams that they shared of what life would be like in LA, and he got writing. The song came together like a dream. It sputtered out like a feeling that needed to be realized, like a thought ready to be varnished. Everything came together in just five minutes. Wills hit record on voice memos, and the song materialized almost instantly.

“All American,” is about idealizing a romantic relationship that may or may not actually exist. It’s also about the torment of realizing that something looks better on the outside than it actually feels, or in the song’s case, imagining what that experience would feel like if it were to be. Sonically, the song is enormous, full of huge pop rock hooks. There are crystalline guitar riffs and drums that hit like a gut punch. Wills is having an excellent time here, and the vibe is very much that of goofing off in a parking lot with your best friends in a parking lot over some beers, or yelling into a microphone at a huge stadium, floodlights and all. It has a little bit of a Blink-182 vibe, it’s fun as hell. The song was produced and engineered by Louie Diller (HOLYCHILD), and also includes musical contributions from Sam Stewart (Lo Moon), Celeste Tauchar (Talker), and Fiona Grey.

As for what’s next? Well, you’ll have to wait and see. But it may or may not involve an EP, and it may or may not involve more deeply anthemic, heart on your sleeve, freak out in the backseat of your car pop rock inspired jams that you can fully lose your shit to.
